The famed 3-Nation Charity Ride is back and this year it’s at Hatyai Thailand from 26th -27th September 2014.
Before you dust off your long-haul riding gear, we thought we’d educate you on the origins of this event that has spanned for more than over a decade.
When three motorcyclists from different country first met more than 20 years ago, they didn’t realise how the friendship they forged would lead them not only to enjoy their motorcycles but to help those not fortunate enough to have the luxuries that they experience. While they thought of doing something for the greater good of society on that ride, nothing really came of it until one of them Mr Chawat Thongsaner from Thailand initiated the movement. His efforts would see him being felicitated at the 15th Anniversary of the 3-Nation Charity Ride at the Equatorial Hotel in the presence of 800 riders from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
The 3-Nation Charity Ride is the brainchild of co-founding motorcycle clubs Team Hanuman from Thailand, Penang Motor Sports Club, Super Bikers Club from Malaysia and Team 27 from Singapore. The ride has been an annual event since its inaugural launch back in 1994. Each year, one club will take charge in planning for the event with the other clubs providing support in their respective countries. This time round, Super Bikers Club from Malaysia takes the reins.
The event attracts more than 1,500 bikers every year and all proceeds from the event go to the host country’s identified charities. In the past 19 years of the 3-Nation Charity Ride, the event has raised more than RM1.5 million in charitable donations for the charities involved since it first started.
Just about anyone with a bike is invited to participate. But because of the distance involved, most of the riders who take part usually ride motorcycles more suited to touring. Despite this, it is not unusual for smaller capacity motorcycles to tag along for the ride. Riders generally do not have to worry if they encounter any problems because there will be marshals riding alongside to provide assistance.
A lot of motorcycle groups will also participate in the ride to show their support for the cause. For the motorcycle enthusiast, it will be a thrill to take in all the different makes and models of motorcycles riding all at once.
First time riders are advised to link up with more experienced riders and riding with your close group of friends makes the ride even more enjoyable too.
